The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is getting flipped turned upside down. The classic '90s sitcom is getting rebooted for NBC's Peacock streaming service, with a new show simply titled BEL-AIR.
As previously reported, BEL-AIR is based on Morgan Cooper's fan film of the same name. Cooper will direct, cowrite and serve as one of the executive producers. Chris Collins (The Wire, John Wick 3) will be showrunner as well as cowriter and co-executive producer.
BEL-AIR will be a serialized one-hour drama with a significantly more intense and dramatic tone than the original. The basic premise of moving from Philadelphia to Bel-Air is in tact, while the themes will be more tapped into modern sociopolitical issues.
According to a press release, "With a reimagined vision, BEL-AIR will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases that were impossible to fully explore in a 30-minute sitcom format, while still delivering swagger and nods to the original show." Peacock has already confirmed a two-season order.
Will Smith has given the new project his cosign, as he will be serving as one off the show's executive producer (as will Quincy Jones, among others). Watch Smith's announcement video below, along with the original BEL-AIR spec trailer.
