Earlier today, NBCUniversal officially announced its new streaming service Peacock, which is set to launch in 2020. While the company has already promised reboots of Saved by the Bell and Battlestar Galactica for the service, it is also considering reviving The Office.
Speaking with Deadline, NBCU chairman of direct-to-consumer and digital enterprises Bonnie Hammer revealed, "It is my hope and goal that we do an Office reboot."
The show's streaming rights were acquired by NBC for half a billion dollars earlier this year.
"The Office comes back to us in January 2021. It is my hope that we can figure what that great reboot would be," Hammer told Deadline, adding, "We are having conversations."
Hammer noted that the initial choices for reboots were made "strategically so they connect back to our legacy." She explained, "We want there to be some connective tissue to what we also have in the library."
In 2017, it was reported that NBC was readying a reboot of The Office with creator Greg Daniels attached. Star Steve Carell has made it clear in recent years that he would not reprise his role as Michael Scott in any revival, telling Collider last year, "I think it's maybe best to leave well enough alone and just let it exist as what it was."
Office stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey recently announced plans to start a new Office-themed podcast. Meanwhile, Carell will star in Apple TV Plus original Morning Show, on top of a new series spoofing Trump's "Space Force."
