Matthew Perry has some unresolved issues with Canada. Last we heard from the sitcom star turned memoirist, he apologized for making it seem like he wanted Keanu Reeves dead in his book Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. Now, he's addressing rumours about his feelings toward another Canadian: Prime Minister (and preeminent Queen cover artist) Justin Trudeau.
During his appearance on last night's (November 1) episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Perry issued a throwback to 2017.
At the time, he had made another talk show appearance with Jimmy Kimmel, where the actor claimed that he bullied the leader of our nation in Grade 5 when they attended Ottawa's Rockcliffe Park Public School together. Shortly afterwards, Trudeau seemed ready to scrap and challenged him to a rematch via Twitter.
While Perry politely declined the opportunity, citing Trudeau's military resources as a deterrent, the Friends star is now walking back those initial claims.
"You know, there was a big rumour about us," the actor told Colbert of Trudeau. "That I beat him up in grade school."
"Did you?" the host asked, to which Perry replied, "I don't think so, no." Colbert pressed, "But you're not entirely sure?"
"My friends, Bryan Murray and Chris Murray, who were the guys — and myself — who invented that weird way of talking," he explained of what could be one such well-known Chandler Bing quirk. "They told me that we beat up Justin Trudeau, and I just believed them."
Yeah, sure. Why not? You know him; he tends to keep talking until somebody stops him.
