Kumail Nanjiani may be the first among the extended Marvel Cinematic Universe family to side with the media franchise's greatest detractor, Martin Scorsese. The Eternals star has now weighed in on the great cinema debate — first ignited by the legendary filmmaker back in 2019 — and his take on the matter may surprise you.

"I obviously love the movies Tarantino makes or Scorsese makes," Nanjiani said of the two biggest advocates of cinema in a recent interview with Esquire. "And I may disagree with Scorsese's opinion on superhero movies, but I mean, who else has earned the right to have an opinion?"

He continued, "If Scorsese hasn't earned the right to have an opinion on movies, then none of us should have an opinion on movies. It's so strange that people get upset about it."

Nanjiani's comments are, of course, in response to the never-ending discourse surrounding the question of what should and should not be considered cinema posed by Scorsese all those years ago.

It's a relatively measured response compared to some takes in recent past. Numerous film industry heavyweights — from Denis Villeneuve to Francis Ford Coppola — have shared their distaste for Marvel movies over the years, while a number of Marvel stars, including Samuel L. Jackson, Simu LiuDanai Gurira and more, have come out in support of the MCU, its actors, crews and writers.
