Freaks and Geeks: Yearbook Edition

BY James KeastPublished Nov 21, 2008

There are always those who never wanted high school to end, for whom the dance, the cheerleading squad and the climactic football game were the pinnacle of their achievements. Yet even geeks and weirdoes sometimes have trouble letting go and this reissue of the Freaks and Geeks Yearbook Edition is for them. Originally released as a fan club-only extra treat when the show’s single-season run debuted on DVD, the 1981-set program’s growing cult following has been commensurate with the show’s rising stars: Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jason Segal, Linda Cardellini and more. Packaged as a legit William McKinley High School yearbook, no detail is spared: there’s a gold embossed "Norseman” logo, signed front and back pages, essays from show creator Paul Feig, candid snaps of cast and crew, fan appreciation pages, episode breakdowns and two extra discs exclusive to this set that are as complete as one under-appreciated and quickly cancelled series could ask for. Seemingly every remaining moment of running tape is included: auditions (often for roles actors didn’t end up playing), deleted scenes, bloopers, conferences and outtakes are manna for F&G nerds worldwide. It’s hard to imagine this kind of attention being paid to any television series, much less one that’s a cult sensation at best. But for those who just can’t leave high school behind, the Yearbook Edition is likely as good as it’s ever going to get.
