Cineplex Is Getting Rid of TimePlay

BY Josiah HughesPublished Jan 8, 2021

It's been an absolute whirlwind few years for Canadian theatre chain Cineplex, who faced major setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and also went through a failed corporate takeover from the UK chain Cineworld. Further cementing that it's the end of an era, the chain is doing away with TimePlay.

Yes, if you ever happen to return to the movies, you will no longer be able to pass the time by answering trivia questions about Glenn Close with your butter-stained smartphone.

The trivia game, which was first beta tested in 2011, had been going strong in 56 locations across Canada. But according to the Canadian Press, Cineplex has split with the tech company that was responsible for the process.

It's a sad day for Canadian cinema heads, to be sure, but TimePlay simply hasn't been the same without Tanner Zipchen. What's next — are they going to get rid of those animated popcorn guys too?
