After concerns about whether or not to proceed with Cassette Store Day's annual event due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, organizers have announced the event will go forward — with some adjustments — later this year.
Cassette Store Day's 2020 edition will officially take place on October 17. The event, which "celebrates the beloved rectangular format," is hosting its eighth edition through a combination of in-person and online formats. Out of an abundance of caution, some of CSD's events this year may take place online through Zoom calls, virtual Q&As or Facebook gigs.
Organizer Brit Williams elaborated in the following statement:
We know it's been a difficult year for everyone. COVID-19 has impacted the very things that make Cassette Store Store Day possible. Our venues, our record shops, our musicians, our record labels. We're all struggling through this together. We have thought this through carefully, and due to the impact of COVID-19, we understand it will not be possible for all record shops to open, or participate as normal. We are taking it day by day, but urge you to sign up if you have any means to sell your stock online for Cassette Store Day this year. It is in our best interest to support not only the musicians who want to release tapes, but the record shops during this time. We understand that gigs and shop events may not take place, but we do hope you'll get creative with this: Throw a Zoom or Facebook gig, film a music video, present a radio show, or if you're a label, do a live Q&A with your band — anything! Let's use this time to be as creative as possible.
Event submissions will be open from June 5 to September 11 at Cassette Store Day's website, where more information about the 2020 event can be found.
