To say that Spotify's already-bad reputation has gotten worse in the past week would be an understatement — and Weezer's Rivers Cuomo can't help but take advantage of the moment: the bandleader has launched Weezify, his own streaming platform.
"Tired of Spotify?" Cuomo tweeted yesterday (January 30). "Come on over to Weezify."
The musician originally shared 2,655 Weezer demos in 2020 as part of the Harvard web programming class he took online in quarantine. Now, he's expanded the catalogue to nearly 3,500 demos — ranging from 1975 to 2017 — in the form of an app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
"I made this app myself," the artist wrote in the app's description on the app store. "It took me all of 2021 to make. I hope you enjoy it."
The Google Play description adds: "Listen to Rivers' demos. Make playlists. Follow other's [sic] playlists. Buy bundles of demos. Also listen to the demos of many of the Neighbours in Mister Rivers' Neighborhood," saying that fans can also connect their Discord accounts to the service.
The demos are available for purchase, bundled by the era in which they were recorded. According to an in-app purchase list, the bundles seem to be priced at $11.99 to $13.99 each.
Among the titles are: Weezma: Daniel, Ryen & Rivers; Alone, V: Before Weezer; Alone, XII: The White Year; Alone, XI: The EWBAITE Years; Alone III, IV: The Blue-Pinker; Alone, VI: The Black Room; Alone, VII: The Green Years; Alone, VIII: The Maladroit Year Alone; X: The Red-Rad-Hurley and Alone, IX: The Make Believe Year.
The prolific band released OK Human and Van Weezer in 2021, and the latter's cover was decidedly an artistic choice. They're currently working on their ambitious four-album Seasons project in between Cuomo's computer programming work.
