UGK feat. OutKast

"International Players Anthem”

BY Cam LindsayPublished Dec 24, 2007

What should have been a triumphant year with the long-awaited return of the UGK ended in tragedy as we all know with the passing of Pimp C. But before his untimely demise, he and partner in rhyme Bun B managed to stage one helluva comeback with Underground Kingz, a stunner of a double disc that marked their first album in five years and reminded/schooled everyone on why we should care. Even without the video - which is arguably the year’s best, beginning with a quilt-clad Andre 3000’s wedding and his buds trying to talk him into keeping the player’s lifestyle and ending with, yeah, a cake-covered catfight – this collaboration between the Southern heavyweights certainly reinstates both of these parties at the top of their game. The weight of the single is obese, as the different flows are anchored by a massive hookJuicy J and DJ Paul’s choice of using favourite old soul Willie Hutch’s "I Choose You.” It’s a contrast set up by the brains of OutKast versus the bollocks of Pimp C and Bun B, the best of which finds Big Boi sliding in a jab at Paul McCartney. Ouch. Come Grammy time, this is the obvious choice for Best Rap Performance, and hopefully the sentimental vote helps get it a little extra air time considering just how deserved UGK and this blinding track are.
