Toronto's Music Gallery has announced a new online festival called What Is: Soul, a five-day event series set to showcase artists, industry leaders, music experts and panellists locally and abroad.

Taking place virtually from June 8 to 12, the fest will see talks, performances and workshops focused on the "embodied, transcendent, dreaming parts of music that exist beyond genre."

What Is: Soul will feature appearances by Washington, DC-based singer-songwriter dreamcastmoe, Toronto's Play De Record store owner Eugene Tam, Atlanta-based producer Byron the Aquarius, multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Angel Bat Dawid, and a panel discussion organized by Anupa Mistry.

The series is the first curation project from Music Gallery artistic director, Sanjeet Takhar, who explained that the event is meant to "examine how we break down systems, reassess assumptions, and prioritize marginalized voices."

"What Is: Soul overcomes common genre-based ontology and explores the human side of music," Takhar said in a statement. "It explores the intangible, warm, weighty, deep down feeling that occurs when soul exists in sound and asks, in a time of bleakness, 'How can forms of soulful music be the light in response to our unstable reality?'"

The event is free to attend for those who register online. For more information about the event and to see the full schedule, head to the Music Gallery website.
