Self-described makers of music for mall goths, Softcult — the duo of Kitchener, ON-hailing sisters Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn — have announced their forthcoming EP, previewed today by new single "Spiralling Out."
Named after a previous 2023 single, Heaven arrives on May 24. It follows 2023's see you in the dark and 2022's Year of the Snake, bringing together additional previous singles (last year's "Haunt You Still" and early 2024 release "Shortest Fuse").
"This EP has an underlying theme, although the songs themselves may seem eclectic and wide-ranging," the pair explained in a statement. "We wanted to write about the contradictions within our society, what an ideal world looks like, and how close or far we are from achieving that reality."
Of brooding new track "Spiralling Out," they added, "We wrote this song about those times when we ruminate over a situation over and over again to no end. Sometimes it feels like there's no amount of self-talk that can get us out of that spiral. It feels like everything is out of control and the world is like a carnival ride spinning all around us, but we are paralyzed and unable to step on or off."
The single comes alongside a video directed by Mercedes that the Arn-Horns filmed on a carousel while on tour in Seattle, WA, quite literally giving themselves motion sickness in the process. Check it out below, where you'll also find the EP tracklist.
