The flower crown-wearing, tax-paying folks at Coachella witnessed the second round of the doubled-up festival this past weekend, taking in performances from a huge list of artists that included Matt & Kim.
During their set, the duo announced a brand new EP titled We Were the Weirdos, which is out now. The four-song set was recorded in the week between the two instalments of Coachella and has been treated to some seriously retro (and unfortunate) album artwork starring Matt Johnson's high school yearbook photo.
In a press release, Johnson described the inspiration and process behind the record:
We took three months off over the winter, the longest break we've ever taken since we started the band. They say absences making the heart grow fonder, and when we got back on the road a few weeks ago we felt so fuckin' inspired! Like we were a new band! You have to ACT on inspiration or it'll slip through your fingers, and then we were charged up even MORE from first weekend of Coachella. I'm so proud of how raw and real these songs are going to be, I really believe there is something special here…
The EP follows the band's 2015 album New Glow. Check out Johnson's sweet high school look above and give the new EP a spin in the player below.
