New York singer-songwriter Margaret Glaspy has announced her third studio album, led by new single "Act Natural." She'll also take her new music on the road for a fall North American tour, which includes a pair of Canadian shows in Toronto and Vancouver.
Echo the Diamond arrives August 18 via ATO. It follows the artist's 2020 sophomore album Devotion and her 2016 debut, Emotions and Math.
Glaspy co-produced the album with her partner, guitarist/composer Julian Lage. They recorded at Manhattan's Reservoir Studios with drummer/percussionist David King and bassist Chris Morrissey.
Echo the Diamond draws its title from a phrase the singer-songwriter offhandedly threw out in conversation with Lage. "Bruce Lee once said to be water — if water is in a teacup, it becomes teacup-shaped; if it's in a glass, then it takes the shape of that glass," she explained in a statement. "For me, Echo the Diamond is a way of saying 'shine bright,' 'be brilliant.'" Glaspy added, "This is the most fluid and immediate music I have ever made."
It's a tone immediately set by the dizzying rush of the album's lead single. "'Act Natural' is about trying to play it cool when you meet someone remarkable," the artist explained. "I wrote it in the afternoon in the back of a tour bus and the riff came separately when I got home. It is one of my favourite songs on the record to play live."
And she'll do just that, embarking on a North American tour starting September 28 in Washington, D.C., in support of the new LP. The following month, she'll stop by Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern on October 2. Glaspy will also hit Vancouver's Biltmore Cabaret on November 10 before wrapping the trek on November 14 in Los Angeles. Tickets go on sale Friday (June 2).
