Ahead of visiting Canada on their 2022 world tour later this year, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have lifted the curtain on their first-ever double album. The prolific Aussie outfit will soon deliver Omnium Gatherum via their own KGLW label.
Omnium Gatherum has yet to receive a release date, though the band assure it's "coming soon" with pre-orders launching March 22. The follow-up to last year's Butterfly 3000, the newly announced double LP has yet to see its 16-song tracklist revealed. Its cover art, found above, comes courtesy of Jason Galea.
Sessions for Omnium Gatherum marked the first time King Gizzard recorded together as a band since the COVID pandemic hit. The 16 included tracks are said to traverse a musical landscape of "gonzoid prog jams, dizzying pop nuggets, rubber-legged hip-hop odysseys and passages of pure thrash-metal abandon." The band's Stu Mackenzie says that, fittingly, the album's title is "literally Latin for 'a collection of miscellaneous people or things.'"
Mackenzie shared of the material, "This recording session felt significant. Significant because it was the first time all six Gizzards had gotten together after an extraordinarily long time in lockdown. Significant because it produced the longest studio recording we've ever released. Significant because (I think) it's going to change the way we write and record music — at least for a while … A turning point. A touchstone. I think we're entering into our 'jammy period'. It feels good."
That aforementioned 'jam' is captured on 18-minute lead single "The Dripping Tap," which you can immerse yourself in below.
As previously reported, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard's world tour includes three Canadian dates, all in October. Select dates will feature support from the Chats, Leah Senior, Amyl and the Sniffers, SPELLLING, DJ Crenshaw and the Murlocs.
