Noise-packed but poppy Halifax trio Kestrels are back with another set of shoegaze-styled tunes. The band will deliver a self-titled LP through the Sonic Unyon imprint on September 30.
The album is the band's third overall and second for Sonic Unyon. It comes off the heels of 2014's The Moon Is Shining Our Way EP, with a press release noting that this latest long-player is "a frenzied union of striking melody and sonic bliss."
The nine-song set was recorded in a couple of places, with bed tracks first cut with Alex Bonenfant (METZ, Crystal Castles) at Toronto's Dream House Studio. Vocals and guitars were later recorded at Kestrels vocalist/guitarist Chad Peck's home studio in rural Nova Scotia. The music was then shipped off to L.A's Seagrass Studio to be mixed by Brad Wood (Smashing Pumpkins, Sunny Day Real Estate).
Kestrels is said to traffic in soft vocals and bizarrely tuned guitar tones, as well as flooded with various pedal and rack-mounted effects. In addition to the trio of Peck, bass-playing brother Devin Peck and drummer Paul Brown, the record features guest performances from Ringo Deathstarr's Elliott Frazier and Alex Gehring.
Below, you'll find a stream of the '90s-minded "No Alternative," its song title quite likely a sly nod to the classic, Pavement and Nirvana-featuring alt-rock compilation of the same name. There, you'll also find the tracklisting and info on a handful of upcoming Kestrels dates.
