Julien Sagot may be known to some music fans as the former drummer of Polaris Music Prize-winning indie rockers Karkwa, but he also earned acclaim as a solo artist for his 2014 Juno-nominated album Valse 333. He's on the brink of releasing its follow-up Bleu Jane, but before it's officially out next week, Exclaim! is giving you an early listen to the album in its entirety.
The LP hears the multi-instrumentalist teaming up once again with producer, arranger and sound engineer Antoine Binette Mercier to deliver nine new songs that blend strings, keys, percussion and vocals into an "electronic haze." Sagot's sound gets filled in with the help of accompanying musicians Fabienne Lucet, Patrick Watson players Mishka Stein and Robbie Kuster, Karkwa's Francois Lafontaine, and Dear Criminals' Frannie Holder.
The resulting collection of songs is an eccentric trip through an array of genres and influences, featuring plenty of unexpected twists and turns along the way. Go along for the ride in the player down below.
Bleu Jane is out March 31 via Simone Records, and Sagot will be performing an album release show on April 6 at Montreal's O Patro Vys.
