Julien Sagot

'Valse 333' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Oct 24, 2014

Louis-Jean Cormier isn't the only member of Karkwa pursuing a solo career. Julien Sagot will release Valse 333 on Tuesday (October 28) through Simone Records, and it's available to stream now on Exclaim.ca.

Sagot made the album through electroacoustic experimentation along with arranger Antoine Binette Mercier and sound engineer Mathieu Parisien. Its title refers to the fact that much of the material is in waltz time.

The album begins in experimental form with "Avion," which combines bit-crushed distortion with no wave textures and husky-voices poetry. Elsewhere, "Couleur jaune" and "Les squelettes" employ sonic adventurousness to more ornately beautiful ends, while "Transsibérien" and "Ficelle" ride bouncy grooves, and "Katheline" is a crackly space-folk ballad.

11/07 Montreal, QC - Cabaret Lion d'Or (Coup de Coeur Francophone)
