Last summer, ceaselessly technologically innovative musician Holly Herndon introduced the world to her deepfake digital "twin" Holly+, and now, the AI artist is back to cover Dolly Parton's "Jolene."
With Ryan Norris on guitar and AI-generated vocal harmonies culled from samples of Herndon's voice, the track is pretty convincingly human, showcasing both the depth and dangers of such technology simultaneously. It seems, at least for now, that Holly+ comes in peace.
The song arrives alongside a music video by digital artists Andy Rolfes and Sam Rolfes, who modelled Holly+'s image using motion-capture technology to animate the digital version of Herndon. Watch that below.
Herndon's latest album was 2019's Proto. Neither she nor Holly+ has announced a follow-up.
