Earlier this year, Superchunk broke their silence with the new charity single "I Got Cut" / "Up Against the Wall." Now, they are back for round two.
Superchunk have just released a 7-inch featuring the new song "Break the Glass" on the A-side, while the flip comes with a cover of Corrosion of Conformity's "Mad World." You can pick it up on either black vinyl (250 copies) or yellow vinyl that's signed by all four members (290 copies). You can order the physical release here via Merge.
Of course, you can also pick up the release digitally via the platform of your choice over here, as well as stream both songs down below.
All proceeds from the single will benefit the Southern Poverty Law Center, described as "a non-profit that uses litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy to fight hate and bigotry and to seek justice for the most vulnerable members of our society."
Speaking of the new single, Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan had this to say:
"Break the Glass" is a song about realizing you are in an emergency situation and trying to not lose your shit so you can respond to the ongoing disaster in a productive way. Trying to figure out why so many people around you are acting like nothing is wrong and wondering if maybe you're the one that's crazy…but you know you're not. We are lucky to have Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog) singing on this track because no one conveys personal (or political) urgency more effectively than Sabrina.
"Mad World" is a song by NC hardcore legends Corrosion of Conformity, one of the first punk bands I saw, and unfortunately the lyrics are still appropriate today.
Like with the band's last single, Merge has teamed up with Paddle8 to auction off extra special editions of "Break the Glass" / "Mad World." A press release explains, "Each winning bidder will receive an exclusive color pressing of the 7-inch housed in the standard sleeve, in addition to a one-of-a-kind, unique work of art on a piece of fine art paper the size of an unfolded 7-inch single sleeve. Bidding begins December 1 and will last approximately two weeks."
