Much can be said about Harry Styles. Maybe almost as much as the array of random projectiles people have thrown at him during his concerts.
He also says things sometimes, and even when they're not much, they tend to make a big impact. Case in point: last year's Venice International Film Festival, when he declared his love of when movies feel like movies.
Most recently, though, Styles made waves with a much less harmless quip during his Album of the Year acceptance speech for Harry's House at the 2023 Grammy Awards. "This doesn't happen to people like me very often and this is so, so nice, thank you very much," the pop star said, crossing a bit of a fine line — and we said that we'd love for him to expand on it, which he now kind of has.
"I'm really really grateful for this, and I'm very aware for my privilege up here tonight," Styles said, doing damage control while accepting the Artist of the Year award during the BRIT Awards broadcast this weekend. And, as the saying goes, if trying to course correct from the backlash fails, do some good old-fashioned Directioner pandering: "I want to thank Niall, Louis, Liam and Zayn, 'cause I wouldn't be here without you," he said of his former One Direction bandmates.
He proceeded to dedicate the honour to some women who weren't nominated in the category: Rina Sawayama, Charli XCX, Florence + the Machine, Mabel and Becky Hill. The BRITs decided to do away with gendered categories in 2021 in an effort to better include non-binary and gender non-conforming artists, then went on to nominate only men for Artist of the Year in 2023 — so it's safe to say that the problem doesn't start and end with Harry. Styles was up for the award alongside Fred again.., Central Cee, George Ezra and Stormzy.
This was just one of the four BRIT awards Styles took home this year, which also included Best Album, Song of the Year for "As It Was" and Best Pop/R&B Act.
