London, ON-based musician Dan Fawcett — who played guitar with Kitchener's hard rock lifers Helix from 2002 to 2004 — was found dead in Gibbons Park this weekend. He was 52.
As per Global News, Fawcett was found unresponsive around 6:45 a.m. ET on Sunday (November 6) near the bottom of the Grosvenor Street hill leading into the park. Life-saving measures were performed by an emergency crew, but he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Police closed off a section of the park near the end of Grosvenor Street on Sunday for what they had initially referred to as an investigation into a "suspicious death." By Monday (November 7), they identified the deceased as Fawcett and ruled his death a homicide — the city's fifth this year.
As it stands, no cause of death has been revealed and no suspects have been apprehended. Investigators are looking to speak with anyone who may have been in the 0-100 block of Grosvenor Street between 2 and 7 a.m. on Sunday, or who may have any information that could help identify the killer.
Fawcett is survived by his young daughter, Layla, for whom a GoFundMe has been set up, as well as several siblings.
Most recently, the late musician performed as part of local Elvis Presley tribute band, Tim 'E' and the Yes Men. He met bandleader Tim Hendry when the Elvis aficionado moved to London from Sault Ste. Marie more than 30 years ago.
"We played in so many different bands together for years and years. I think every band I ever played drums in in London, Dan at one point had to be the guitar player," he told Global News over the phone from his current residence in Pigeon Forge, TN, where he's putting together a Presley tribute show that he had hoped Fawcett would join.
Helix paid tribute to the musician's memory on Facebook, describing their former guitarist as "a sweet guy who wouldn't hurt a fly."
