"Home is where the heart is," the adage goes, and it couldn't be clearer to Kari Faux. Upon leaving the "plastic life" of Los Angeles behind, the Arkansan returned to her native Little Rock for a year while also spending time in Houston, TX, a re-establishment of her roots that in turn fuelled an artistic reinvigoration.
The result, REAL B*TCHES DON'T DIE!, sees Faux channelling power as a Southern rap mage, grounded by wisdom handed down via family and treasured femcees alike in conjuring myriad flows, indelible hooks and wielding wit and heart in equal measure.
After alluring listeners with these spells on tracks like "ME FIRST," "TURNIN' HEADS" and "MONEY ANGELS," Faux and late friend Gangsta Boo ride a "WHITE CAPRICE" to the stars in the album's cosmic back half. A transcendent suite finds the artist recounting her creative rebirth on "MAKE A WISH," celebrating her connection with producer and boyfriend Phoelix (behind the album's prismatic selection of sounds) with "PAST LIFE," expressing the desire to embrace vulnerability in "DRUNK WORDS SOBER THOUGHTS," and on "BORROWED TIME," honouring those who live on in lifting spirits from beyond the mortal plane: "This song is dedicated to the ones I hear, but can't call / Who finally got their wings and stand a million feet tall."
