Vancouver soul singer Dawn Pemberton has lent her pipes to numerous acts, but she's waited until now to issue her debut solo album. Say Somethin' is due out on October 28 through Do Right! Music, and it's available to stream ahead of time on Exclaim.ca.
The album consists of soul-jazz and funk with a special emphasis on rhythm. "I've got a rhythmic stream running through me at all times," Pemberton said in a statement. "It's all about the groove for me."
This translates in a range of feels: opener "For You" starts things off on a mellow foot, while "Deeper" and "Don't Waste Your Time" bring the funk with their blasts of brass, "Hello Love" is sexy and seductive, and "Inside & Out" is smoothly jazzy.
Hear it all below. Pemberton will celebrate the release of the album with a November 13 show at Vancouver's Fortune Sound Club.
