Vancouver soul singer Dawn Pemberton released her debut solo effort Say Somethin' last October, but the LP got the special Record Store Day vinyl treatment this weekend — and to honour the album finally coming to wax, Exclaim! is pleased to premiere the new video for the full-length's title track.
"It looks at what happens when things like ego, pride, fear and selfishness prevent us from connecting with others in a genuine way," said Pemberton in a statement about the clip. "Lovers, strangers, first dates, the lonely, the seekers... all are struggling to find ways to be seen and heard. In some circumstances things work out and in others it is too late. Ultimately, the video is asking 'What is it that you need to say and why aren't you saying it?'"
That sentiment translates on screen, depicting scenes between a variety of folks having trouble expressing themselves. Pemberton's inspirational message seems to have a positive effect on most of them by the end of the clip.
Say Somethin' is out now on vinyl via Do Right! Music, which currently has the wax platter up for sale. Pemberton will also be performing at the Vancouver International Jazz Fest on June 27. For now, though, watch the video premiere of "Say Somethin'" below.
