Altameda

'Dirty Rain' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jun 30, 2016

Edmonton-based Americana-inspired outfit Altameda recently shared the title track and follow-up single "Borrowed Suit, Secondhand Dress" from their debut album Dirty Rain, and now Exclaim! is giving you an early listen to the upcoming record in its entirety.

The 10-song set was recorded in Alberta's capital with producer Jeff Kynoch last winter, though the results are a perfect soundtrack to the onset of summer — whether you plan to spend yours in a dive bar, in the fields, on the open road or at a truck stop along the way.

Twangy melodic numbers like the opening aforementioned title tune give way to rootsy, blues rock-inspired cuts like "Blackmarket Blues" and "Burning Down." There's still plenty to please fans of more traditional folk, though, with gentler fare like "Smokestack Thunder," the piano-led "Queen of the Street," and the lush, haunting closer "I Saw a Ghost Last Night."

"Troy [Snaterse, singer/songwriter] has been perfecting his songwriting since an early age and is really gifted when it comes to writing poetry that is firmly supported by the music underneath," explains keyboard and piano player Matthew Kraus. "We're very fortunate to have found each other, the chemistry was instantaneous and there is a definite brotherhood to this band. We each want to make the other guy sound amazing and are confident in each other. Collectively, we're able to create songs that we can listen back to and enjoy — hopefully others will too."

You can hear the varied yet cohesive collection of songs weave together by giving the record a spin from start to finish in the player below, before Dirty Rain officially arrives July 7.
