Current Exclaim! cover star Maya Hawke is gearing up to release her sophomore album MOSS next week, but she's also been thinking about death — for her Stranger Things character Robin, that is.
Her co-star Millie Bobby Brown has vocalized that the show's creators, the Duffer Brothers, need to start killing off characters in its upcoming fifth and final season at Netflix; the cast is so big, they can't even all fit into a photo together. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Hawke seemed to agree with Brown, saying she would "love to die" and get her "hero's moment" like (spoiler alert!) Eddie (Joseph Quinn) did in the Stranger Things 4 finale with an assist from Metallica.
"Well, it's the last season, so people are probably going to die," she told the publication's Angie Martoccio. "I would love to die and get my hero's moment. I'd love to die with honour, as any actor would."
Hawke continued: "But I love the way that the Duffer Brothers love their actors. The reason that they write so beautifully for me and for everyone else is because they fall in love with their actors and their characters, and they don't want to kill them. I think that's a beautiful quality that they have, and I wouldn't wish it away."
The actor would also be willing to continue playing her character beyond the series proper — as long as Joe Keery's on board too.
"Normally I wouldn't really be a proponent of a spinoff, but if I got to do it with Joe Keery, I would do anything," Hawke said. "He's so funny and wonderful and smart, and he's got great boundaries. He's an excellent coworker, and I would do anything with him." Perhaps a musical collaboration between her and Keery's Djo project would fit the bill?
Additionally, when asked if she shipped Keery's character, Steve, with Nancy (Natalia Dyer), the artist said she thinks her character probably wants to see them end up together more than she does.
"I think that Robin's definitely shipping Steve and Nancy," Hawke answered. "I think that Robin definitely wants whatever would make Steve the happiest, which appears to certainly be Nancy. I personally think that's the thing that's so beautiful about the show: it actually has never really been about romance."
She poignantly added:
People are always shipping characters in that show, but really that show's about friendship. There's such an over-emphasis in media that we consume about romantic love, and it being the ultimate destination that we're all supposed to arrive at. Find this one perfect person and then everything's good and the story's over. Part of me would ship it way more if the story wasn't ending, but there's something about our female heroes always getting endings — which is them finding the right guy — that I'm super over.
We'll just have to wait and see how Hawke's upcoming dark comedy Do Revenge ends, but death is feeling more likely than love in this case. All is as she would like it to be!
