David Cronenberg Expects 'Crimes of the Future' Walkouts During Graphic Scenes

Viewers may be "revulsed to the point that they want to leave"

If you didn't think David Cronenberg's forthcoming sci-fi body horror Crimes of the Future was going to be a doozy from the trailer that dropped last week, the filmmaker's latest interview about the film will probably convince you.

Speaking with Deadline about the film's upcoming Cannes premiere, the director explained that Crimes of the Future's tagline — "surgery is the new sex" — is interpreted pretty literally and graphically onscreen, and that he expects some viewers may have to tap out early.

"I do expect walkouts in Cannes, and that's a very special thing. There are some very strong scenes," Cronenberg told the publication. "I mean, I'm sure that we will have walkouts within the first five minutes of the movie. I'm sure of that."

While the film is apparently peppered with gross-out scenes, it is devoid of straightforward sex scenes, in keeping with its futuristic surgical motif. It follows, the filmmaker explained, that the final 20-minute stretch of Crimes of the Future will be the most unbearable visually, noting viewers may be "revulsed to the point that they want to leave." Spooky.

"Some people who have seen the film have said that they think the last 20 minutes will be very hard on people, and that there'll be a lot of walkouts. Some guy said that he almost had a panic attack," the filmmaker continued. "People always walk out, and the seats notoriously clack as you get up, because the seats fold back and hit the back of the seat. So, you hear clack, clack, clack."

Crimes of the Future — starring Kristen Stewart, Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux — will see wide theatrical release on June 3 following its May 25 Cannes premiere. See the latest trailer below.
