Italian horror legend Dario Argento is making a return to television with his first series in decades, marking his first proper project since 2012.
The show is called Longinus and is described as an episodic drama created by Argento, who is known for such classic films as Suspiria and Profondo Rosso, among many others.
The project was announced today by Italian company Publispei, whose Verdiana Bixio will produce Longinus alongside BIM Production (which is part of the Wild Bunch Group). Riccardo Russo will produce for BIM.
So far, details behind what to expect from the show are vague at best, but Longinus promises "mysterious murders, suspense and unexpected revelations, esoteric elements and ancient enigmas" in the "international thriller suspended between reality and the supernatural, set among the French Alps of Grenoble and Siena, during the Palio."
For the unfamiliar, the Palio is a horse race held twice a year in Siena, Italy, where 10 horses and riders race against each other bareback dressed in different colours representing 10 of the 17 contrade, otherwise known as city wards.
So far, it's unclear when or where the TV series will air, but Argento did discuss a new episodic project earlier this year, saying the project would likely arrive via a streaming hub like Netflix or Amazon.
While on Radio Rai 1's Un Giorno da Pecora in March, Argento said, "My new movie? I am working on it with my writers. There is still some work to do but I am happy with the result. It will be a serial movie, for television broadcasting, consisting of eight episodes in total."
When asked how the project would be released, Argento said, "Netflix or Amazon," adding it would arrive "Maybe at the end of next year."
It's unclear if Argento was discussing the newly announced Longinus, but most likely this was the project he was referring to at the time.
Argento last released a film in 2012 with his Dracula 3D.
