A Fibonacci sequence... of moves to grapple an opponent to the ground? Tool's Maynard James Keenan — Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt — is hosting an introductory class on getting people into submission holds in Cottonwood, AZ, next month.
According to an Instagram post, the singer will be teaching a once-in-a-lifetime class at his own Verde Valley BJJ academy on February 11, aiming to catch any jiu-jitsu connoisseurs (or Tool fans) travelling to Arizona for the Super Bowl (you know, the Rihanna concert bookended by sports), noting that Cottonwood is located just north of Phoenix.
The class is described as a "detailed orientation" for those new to the practice, including white and blue belts, but upper belts are still welcome to attend. You have to be at least 14 to participate in the two-session seminar and wear a proper BJJ gi. For the low price of $199 USD, you can learn the self-defence martial art from the foremost onstage Jenga player — and he'll even throw in a T-shirt!
As you may recall, Keenan showed off his jiu-jitsu chops last year when he demonstrated the move that "could have saved Chris Rock's life" in the wake of the Oscar's slap. "We call it a 'cuck block,'" the vocalist concluded in his video demo, adding in the caption, "I realize we're on the ass end of beating this dead horse, but fuck it!"
Being a man of range, Keenan also paid tribute to Mimi Parker after her death in 2022, calling the late Low bandleader "a huge influence on my writing approach."
