Following two digital iterations and a year off in 2022, Festival Lingua Franca is back in-person and in action. This time, creator and organizer Daniel G. Wilson (JONCRO) has enlisted Kai Lumbang to co-host the two-day event.

Taking place September 1 and 2 in Toronto, Lingua Franca 2023 will call two venues home — Bar Orwell for its first night, and Houndstooth for its second. The BIPOC-focused festival highlights rock bands with racialized members, and its first wave of performers include Spirit Desire, Growing Fins, Weather Boy and Karoshi.

This year, Lingua Franca will also be home to a BIPOC-fronted zine and comics fair on its second night. "Comics are one of my oldest loves and I am excited to showcase a sample of the amazing diverse graphic and literary talents who live in the area," Wilson tells Exclaim!

They continue: "I am also extremely excited to continue the mission of the festival to showcase loud rock, punk, and metal bands featuring members of the BIPOC community and to remind people that rock music is more colourful and diverse than four white people on a stage. Spread the word, we're back!"

Tickets for night one of Festival Lingua Franca will be available at the door of Bar Orwell that evening, and night two at Houndstooth will be free/pay-what-you-can. The full festival lineup is coming soon.

More details about Festival Lingua Franca can be found on its Instagram.
