This month would have seen Studio Ghibli soundtrack maestro Joe Hisaishi bring his beloved scores on tour in Canada, but fans of his work on Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke are in luck, with the announcement of three new vinyl packages behind the classic animated feature.
Per The Vinyl Factory, Hisaishi's Princess Mononoke compositions will arrive on wax on July 24, with pre-orders already going live on retail sites such as Norman Records.
The film's "soundtrack" album, recorded with the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, features the film's full 62-minute score — marking its vinyl debut. It also features the film's main theme sung by Yoshikazu Mera.
A "symphonic version" will see the Princess Mononoke score performed as a suite with the Czech Philharmonic, recorded a year after the film's release.
A final "image album" will feature a version of the soundtrack that was recorded before the album edit, using Miyazaki's image notes.
All three releases feature remastered audio, liner notes and new artwork. You can find all three covers below. As Norman point out, Hisaishi's "gorgeously cinematic score...marries classical, new age and ceremonious Japanese folk."
Earlier this year, Hisaishi released compilation Dream Songs: The Essential Joe Hisaishi. You can revisit his "Princess Mononoke Suite" from the collection below.
