Joe Hisaishi — the famed Japanese soundtrack composer best known for his classic Studio Ghibli scores — is making a rare trip to Canada.

This spring, Hisaishi will be performing two nights in Vancouver and another in Toronto.

The Vancouver shows take place at the Orpheum on April 3 and 4, when Hisaishi will conduct the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

The Toronto show, meanwhile, happens on April 18, when he will conduct the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at the Meridian Hall.

A press release explains the following: "As the premiere performance in Canada, Maestro Hisaishi picked his iconic compositions for Canadian audiences; he will conduct a grand orchestral piece, 'The East Land Symphony' (2016), for both cities as the core piece, and the symphonic suite 'Castle in the Sky' (2017) for Vancouver and the 'Spirited Away Suite' (2018) for Toronto, both beautiful piano parts to be played by the Maestro himself."

For the unfamiliar, Hisaishi is true Japanese cinema royalty, masterminding the scores to an incredibly long list of films. Among these are beloved Studio Ghibli soundtracks to Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, among others.

He also famously scored such films as Takeshi Kitano's classic Hana-bi, Yojiro Takita's Departures and Isao Takahata's The Tale of Princess Kaguya, among countless others.
