SOAK

"Digital Witness" (St. Vincent cover)

BY Gregory AdamsPublished May 1, 2015

UK songwriter SOAK (a.k.a. Bridie Monds-Watson) is almost ready to unveil her debut LP, Before We Forgot How to Dream, but ahead of the release she's putting some shine on a different modern masterpiece by covering art rock all-star St. Vincent's 2014 single, "Digital Witness."

SOAK strips the song of most of its mechanics, swapping out much of the revolving synths and robotic stomps in favour of a more intimate and organic strum of an acoustic guitar. She hasn't entirely escaped from a digital world, though, as you'll hear a pitch-shifted beast-from-beneath doubling-up lines throughout the cover, as well as an inhuman, helium-huffing counterpart.

You can stream the softened redo of St. Vincent's big hit down below. As for SOAK's Before We Forgot How to Dream, it lands June 2 via Rough Trade.
