Few celebrities stepped up to back the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike faster than Snoop Dogg. In early May, he discussed the "fucked up" streaming economy and even went so far as to suggest that the music industry will need to "figure that out the same way."
Now that Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) members have been on the picket line with film and television writers since July 14, Hollywood activity has nearly been brought to a halt, with release dates for countless projects being pushed. Oh, and thousands upon thousands of writers and actors are being forced to live even more precariously than they were before as they fight for fair compensation from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
Snoop Dogg had a pair of likewise precarious Doggystyle 30th anniversary concerts at the Hollywood Bowl on his itinerary, already postponed to October 20 and 21 from June 27 and 28 because of his and Dr. Dre's solidarity with the striking. Now, the concerts have been outright cancelled.
"We regret to inform you that due to the ongoing strike and the uncertainty of when this will be over, we need to cancel the Hollywood Bowl show," Snoop shared on Instagram today. "We continue to stand in solidarity with all of our brothers and sisters in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA during this difficult time and remain hopeful that the AMPTP will come back to the negotiating table with a REAL proposal and we can all get back to work."
Even before SAG-AFTRA joined the strike, film studios under the AMPTP umbrella made it clear that they would be willing to let the WGA strike continue until writers "start losing their apartments."
