Montreal-based musicians will celebrate the life and music of the late Sinéad O'Connor with a July tribute concert.
Presented by POP Montreal, Universal Mother will see performers cover O'Connor's work at the Sala Rossa on July 26, marking one year since her passing.
The evening will feature performances by Bonjay's Alanna Stuart, Matt Holubowski, Erika Angela of Thus Owls, Orkestar Kriminal's Giselle Webber, Lapelúda, Bijuriya and Katie Moore. Those artists will be backed by a cast of local players including Patty McGee (drums), Marc-André Landry (bass) and Joe Yarmusch (guitar).
Tickets for the tribute concert are now available for purchase. Proceeds from the evening will go to La Maison Bleue, a Quebec non-profit and charitable organization supporting young mothers and families.
"Sinéad O'Connor communed with her fans through the beauty, power, and strength of her voice, lyrics and lifestyle," tribute co-organizer Tamara Kramer shares in a statement. "When she died last year, it was as if many of us had lost an old friend. A troubled friend. A wise teacher. An unshakeable feminist and anti-racist. The Irish star and iconoclast was a dedicated artist, mother and survivor who never shied away from speaking up about the faults of the church, child abuse and her struggles with mental health. She also had a wicked sense of humour."
O'Connor was found unresponsive at her home and was pronounced dead at the scene in July 2023, with an autopsy later concluding the artist had died of natural causes.
Earlier this month, POP Montreal made a preliminary reveal of their 2024 lineup with Sunset Rubdown, Marnie Stern, Cassandra Jenkins, Stars and more.
