Happy early 30th birthday to Blue Rodeo's Five Days in July! In celebration of the album's anniversary, Canadian singer-songwriters Rose Cousins, Jill Barber and Jenn Grant have shared a cover of the album's single "Dark Angel."
The trio all share a love for Five Days in July, with Cousins sharing that it is "woven into our Canadian landscape." She added: "That record, especially 'Dark Angel,' was a top song in the soundtrack of my teen emotional world."
According to Barber, the idea for the cover came about during a Blue Rodeo concert last spring, where she had been backstage with Grant. In a press release, she shared:
Jim Cuddy turned to us and suggested that, along with Rose Cousins, we should form a trio … like a Canadian version of the Dolly Parton, Linda Rondstadt and Emmylou Harris "Trio." The next thing we knew we were sending Rose a video message saying: "We're doing this, because Jim said so."
Having all experienced their coming-of-age on the East Coast in Halifax's music scene, paying homage to their musical influences has an even deeper layer of significance to the trio, as it also honours their longtime friendship.
"I treasure these women and it's deeply pleasing to have recorded something together, especially this meaningful song on the 30th anniversary of an album we all love so much by a band we love and have now all shared the stage with…" said Cousins.
The release of the collaborative cover marks a full-circle moment for the trio. "The idea to record a haunting cover of 'Dark Angel,' that weaves our three voices together in harmony for the first time (on record), felt as if it was always meant to be," said Barber.
