Phoebe Bridgers is the latest singer to offer up a Metallica cover for the band's upcoming 53-song covers album, The Metallica Blacklist.
Bridgers' take on "Nothing Else Matters" is haunting, with hushed vocals, twinkling pianos and soft strings that create a progressively tense atmosphere. In an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Bridgers described her cover, saying it "almost sounds baroque."
She also detailed her relationship with Metallica:
I've always been a big Metallica fan. I think it's funny, my intro to them was probably way later than so many people who have always loved them. But when I was a teenager, I went to Outside Lands, and I definitely knew Metallica songs from video games and stuff, but I went to Outside Lands and saw their set and was like, "This is a rock band." It's kind of a gateway to metal because they're so hooky and you can hold onto so much of it and it actually can get stuck in your head. So that's what I've always loved about Metallica is that they don't shy away from a great hook.
The album also includes covers from PUP, Mac DeMarco, St. Vincent, Jason Isbell, Kamasi Washington and Weezer, among others. The project is meant to pay homage to the metal band's celebrated 1991 self-titled record, known best as The Black Album.
It's also a charity project, with every track benefiting Metallica's charitable foundation, All Within My Hands, in addition to a charity of each artist's choice.
The Metallica Blacklist is out on September 10.
