Earlier this month, Montebello Rockfest organizers shared that COVID-19 had halted plans to return the festival to its original scale in 2020. To tide fans over until a planned 2021 return, the event is heading online next month in the form of an "immersive virtual simulation."
Rockfest's virtual 2020 edition is set to run June 19 through 21, and according to organizers, it will be "exactly as if you were there: the road trip to Montebello, your arrival at the campground, the party all over town, the music, the sunburns and the usual madness while shouting ROCKFEST!"
While other summer festivals have opted to launch themselves into livestreaming, this year's virtual Rockfest became a reality through piecing together "thousands of hours of unreleased footage accumulated for nearly 15 years" in addition to new footage.
Organizers say the format is the first of its kind worldwide, allowing viewers to "relive the unique festival experience all weekend, 24 hours a day, with over 50 hours of exclusive content."
While a list of 2020 performers has yet to be revealed, the fest's statement recalls artists including System of a Down, Blink-182, Rammstein, Linkin Park, Motley Crue, the Offspring, Deftones, Korn, Limp Bizkit, NOFX, Pennywise, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie and "hundreds more" gracing Rockfest stages throughout the years.
