This year has seen DEVO celebrate 50 years of music-making on a world tour, and ahead of a North American leg this fall, the band's Mark Mothersbaugh has shared that the dates will indeed be their last.
Speaking with The Guardian, Mothersbaugh was asked about the band's decision to pump the brakes on live performances having reached the half-century milestone.
After asking reporter Daniel Dylan Wray, "Are you married?" Mothersbaugh quips, "Imagine you had four wives and you worked together. It's tricky being in a band."
Gerald Casale added, "You've got a body of work informed by a whole manifesto and philosophy. Do you let go and move on to the next thing? You want change, otherwise you're stale, but you don't want to be contrived."
DEVO's farewell tour of North America will see them play nine US dates on the West Coast before a December trip to Australia for a festival appearance. Find their remaining 2023 itinerary below.
Of course, it's possible DEVO could go full Elton John and extend their farewell trek. Mothersbaugh joked, "I'm looking forward to 2073. We'll play 100th anniversary DEVO shows and then maybe retire."
Casale feels differently, sharing, "I'm in denial. Because I love performing and I'll hate to see it go. It was part of DEVO's DNA. But we did as well as we could, for as long as we could."
The farewell tour certainly isn't the last we'll hear from DEVO. Earlier this year, it was reported that a band-sanctioned documentary was in the works, and The Guardian notes that a new rarities collection titled Art Devo 1973-1977 is set for release in September.
