Mac DeMarco Reveals That He Has "Way More" Material That Didn't End Up on His 199-Song Album

He also offered an update on his next LP

Mac DeMarco's hard drive dump of a recent album, One Wayne G, contains an incredible 199 songs — but believe it or not, he actually had "way more" material that he cut out from the tracklist. DeMarco has now spoken about that scrapped material, and offered an update on his next full-length.

Speaking with NME, he discussed how he ended up with the seemingly random total of 199 songs: "I landed on, '200 would be a good amount. That's a ridiculous enough amount to do,'" he said. "So there was way more, but I went through it and scrapped a bunch of it. It wound up being 199 because there was so much — and it took me a while to siphon through it or collect all of it or organize it — that there wound up being a duplicate, or maybe an alternate mix or something. I was like, 'Ah shit.'"

He noted that some of the songs on One Wayne G had been intended for a more traditional album — presumably the standout ones with titles like "20200817 Proud True Toyota," "20210215 Ball for the Coach" and "20221102 The Truth." He said, "There's a collection of the songs on One Wayne G that I did have in a folder, and I was like, 'I'll make an album out of these ones.' And I tried at one point during COVID, and I was like, 'This doesn't feel right.'"

That album might not have panned out, but DeMarco did offer an update about his next album. Although he's currently not writing or recording, he clarified that he has a concept and tentative title, and speculated that he might record it remotely while travelling on his motorcycle.

"I'm going to sing," he said, promising that it would be a shift away from the all-instrumental style of Five Easy Hot Dogs. "I forgot that I like singing. And the thing is, too, now that I don't smoke, it feels good. It doesn't disappear, it doesn't hurt — the notes are there."
