Kristin Hayter (a.k.a. Lingua Ignota) has come forward with allegations of "mental, emotional and sexual" abuse against Alexis Marshall, the frontman of noise rockers Daughters.

After initially discussing the assault she alleges she was subjected to in an interview with Anthony Fantano shared last night (December 8), Hayter issued a statement detailing the horrors of her experience with Marshall.

The two musicians met in 2018 when Hayter opened for Daughters, and later struck up a relationship from July 2019 through June of this year.

In her statement, Hayter accused Marshall of raping her multiple times during their relationship, penetrating her without consent or obtaining consent through coercion, deception, gaslighting and manipulation. At one point, she says he injured her to the point where she required surgery for a massive lumbar disc herniation, which resulted in Cauda Equina Syndrome — threatening permanent loss of bowel and bladder function.

In December 2020, Hayter attempted suicide as a result of the alleged abuse. The artist claims that, after she and Marshall finally ended their relationship, she learned of his "long history of predatory and abusive/exploitative behaviour towards women."

Hayter cites incidents between her ex and other women that range from sexual harassment and misconduct to engaging in sexual relationships with subordinates at work and sexual assault; at least some of which have been corroborated by multiple people, including another of Marhsall's ex-partners.

The frontman has since denied the allegations, responding (via his publicist):

I absolutely did not engage in any form of abusive behaviour towards Kristin. Kristin is a person that I loved and cared deeply for, however, our relationship was unhealthy for both of us. I can assure anyone reading this that I absolutely did not abuse her, mentally or physically. I am investigating legal options.

This aligns with the tendencies illustrated in the musician's statement, where she wrote: "[Marshall] always denied his behaviour and gaslit me when confronted with irrefutable proof."
