There really isn't any better way to get self-proclaimed shy guy Kaytranada out of his shell than to sit him across from Amelia Dimoldenberg for a Chicken Shop Date. Unless, of course, you put a piece of DJ equipment in front of him while you do it.
Thankfully, that's exactly how interview savant Dimoldenberg conducted her sit-down with the Montreal producer. And boy, did it pay off. At first, she naturally had to broach the classic Canadian stereotype: the answer is yes, he puts extra maple syrup on his food. She also pitched a documentary for his legendary 2013 Boiler Room set in Montreal, which he quickly shut down.
Once the interviewer started toying with the VTech KidiStar DJ Mixer™, Kaytra's eyes lit up, and the conversation started flowing a bit more smoothly — but it was still at least a little awkward, as any Chicken Shop Date has to be.
That's when the pair talked about love, showed off their signature dance moves, and Kaytra coached Dimoldenberg through a beat before taking the reins and making a hit that should be sampled for years to come. "As a kid, I would probably spend a lot of time with this," he said of the VTech.
With his production prowess confirmed as officially unquestionable, Dimoldenberg also asked if he ever steps behind the decks to DJ when he's at house parties. "Sometimes you just see a CDJ and you're just like, 'Oh my god, am I gonna put my USB in there? This is crazy,'" he said. "And you can't really resist."
There has to be weirder places to put a USB, right? So, if you've got a house party coming up and Kaytranada's on the guest list, do yourself a favour and put a CDJ — or at very least a VTech mixer — in front of him.
