It's an especially good week to not be a TikTok user, lest you want to know too much about JoJo Siwa. The Dance Moms star turned kids' performer has undergone another transformation by calling herself edgy now that she dresses like a member of KISS and dares to lightly swear in her debut grown-up single, "Karma."
You would think Siwa would know better than to compare her recent re-brand to that of Miley Cyrus's Bangerz era, but she managed to piss off the stans, who in turn let her know that she looks the same as she once did, just in darker colours. The track itself is poorly produced with crunchy vocals that likely maxed out whatever compression effect they used on it, with no real hook to get stuck in your head.
Even with the promise that she's now a "bad girl" who only feels bad about cheating when it bites her in the ass, Siwa is only allotted one real swear word in the whole song. "Karma's a bitch, I should've known better / If I had a wish, I would've never effed around," she sings lifelessly. There's no real commitment to the bit here, it's as if Siwa herself isn't fully sold on her new persona.
To be clear, it's sad that kids' entertainers feel immense pressure to be taken seriously once they decide it's time to move on. Siwa is 20 and has plenty of time to figure it out in a less cringe, more genuine way. Until then, watch the insane music video for "Karma" below.
