Ice Spice really does stay cool as a cucumber. This spring, just ahead of Taylor Swift's dating-a-dirtbag era, the 1975's Matty Healy was under fire for a resurfaced episode of Adam Friedland's podcast, where the frontperson laughed along as Friedland and his co-host did some distasteful accents and tried to guess the Bronx rapper's ethnicity.
"Yeah, that's what Ice Spice is like," the musician had said on the resurfaced recording from February, also calling Ice Spice "dumb" as he reflected on an attempt to slide into her Instagram DMs. He later (sort of) apologized.
While Healy said the controversy over the appearance didn't "actually matter," Ice Spice never publicly commented on the whole debacle — she simply showed up with a verse on a remix of Swift's "Karma" just before the pop star and the slack-jawed fuckwit broke up.
Now, in an interview with Variety, Ice Spice has finally addressed the incident. Despite having been a fan of the 1975 since she was a teenager, the rapper says she "didn't really care" about Healy and co.'s unsavoury commentary.
"When I had heard that little podcast or whatever, I was so confused," she told journalist Steven J. Horowitz. "Because I heard 'chubby Chinese lady' or some shit like that, and I'm like, 'Huh? What does that even mean?' First of all, I'm thick. What do you mean Chinese? What?"
Ice Spice, who is of Dominican and Nigerian descent, continued, "But then they apologized or whatever. And the whole time, I didn't really care."
"But that's funny because I saw [Healy] at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a couple days ago, and he was like, 'Hey, you OK?' and I'm like, 'Of course,'" she added. "He apologized to me a bunch of times. We're good."
Ice Spice is too busy dropping fire flows, making Dunkin' Donuts dollars and being besties with Taylor Swift for this shit. Meanwhile, the 1975 just shared that they will be taking a break from touring.
