Listen to Suicide's Nearly Unrecognizable 1988 Live Cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA"

It's featured on the 35th Anniversary Reissue of the band's 'A Way of Life'

Bruce Springsteen's love of Suicide is well documented — Nebraska's "State Trooper" is essentially a Suicide song, and he's been covering "Dream Baby Dream" live for years, with a cover appearing on 2014's High Hopes —  but now we get to hear Suicide return the favour.

A 35th anniversary reissue of Suicide's 1988 album A Way of Life is being released on May 26 via Mute / BMG, and it includes a live cover of Springsteen's "Born in the USA," performed by Suicide at a 1988 show in Paris.

If you're wondering what a Suicide cover of "Born in the USA" might sound like, the answer is pretty much nothing like "Born in the USA." The cover's audio includes the crowd jeering after Alan Vega tells them they're about to perform "Born in the USA," with Vega promising that he and Martin Rev will "fuck it up, don't worry." They do exactly that, transforming Springsteen's song into a wiggly, motorik boogie that completely eschews the original's melody and most of its lyrics.

The A Way of Life reissue was remastered by Denis Blackham of Skye Mastering, and includes five bonus tracks discovered by Jared Artaud while he was working on the Vega Vault archives (Vega died in 2016).

In addition to bonus tracks, the reissue will also feature all-new cover art designed by Artaud and Michael Handis. The new edition will be available on transparent blue vinyl (with an art card and two bonus tracks), CD (with a 4-page booklet and five bonus tracks) and digital.
