Fancey

'Love Mirage' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jan 23, 2017

New Pornographers' Todd Fancey is nearly set to release his latest solo record under his Fancey moniker, and Exclaim! is giving you an exclusive first listen to the album in its entirety.

As previously reported, Love Mirage blends vintage synths and keyboards with a healthy injection of disco spirit to create a '70s AM radio sound, making for a bright, modern take on classic dancefloor pop.

The opening title track starts things off on a sparkly note, before "Wander" takes things in a deeper, funkier direction. There are plenty more falsetto-laden nods to disco with cuts like "Dream All Night," "Disco Angel" and "Turn Around Baby," while "Witch Attack!" closes out the album with one last bombastic blast.

"After spinning my wheels direction-wise for a long time between Schmancey and the new album Love Mirage, I met co-producer Allan Rodger, whose musical abilities allowed me to finally do what I'd always wanted to do free of irony….a '70s AM radio-style record," Fancey tells Exclaim! "Allan brought in singer Angela Kelman and a strict 'era-correct' policy. All vintage instrumentation, no 'plug-ins' or loops or modern synths or semi-performances. We wanted it to sound like it was recorded in Toronto in 1979. Angela also brought in young (13-year-old) Olivia Maye to top off the sound."

You can now hear that authentic, retro radio sound come to life on Love Mirage before it's officially out on January 27. Pre-order the album here, but first, give it an early listen in the player below.
