Dwayne Gretzky Announce Debut Album, Share Cover of ABBA's "S.O.S."

Long-running Toronto band Dwayne Gretzky have quite the reputation as a live cover band, but the group have only now revealed plans for their very first studio album. The self-titled LP will arrive on August 23.

The record consists of covers — both experimental reinterpretations and familiar note-for-note versions — and the first one to be announced and shared is a take on ABBA's "S.O.S."

"We're all big fans of ABBA, and 'S.O.S.' is a particular favourite, so it was an interesting experiment to dress it up in different clothes and see it through a new lens," the band's Nick Rose said in a statement. "Lyrically the song has so much desperation and urgency, it seemed fitting to put in this sort of dark, piano-driven indie-rock world."

The group will release their take on "S.O.S." as a 7-inch single, backed by a cover of ELO's "Livin' Thing" on the B-side.

A full tracklisting has yet to be revealed for Dwayne Gretzky, but you can listen to the first offering from the album down below.

It arrives with a video animated by Bossie's Anne Douris.
