In 2008, Welsh singer Duffy emerged with her fantastic breakthrough album Rockferry. Then a contemporary of Amy Winehouse and Adele, the singer was mostly out of the public spotlight for the 2010s. Now, she has opened up about the traumatic reason for her relative anonymity, saying she was abducted, drugged and raped.
In a lengthy post on Instagram, the singer explained she was contacted by a journalist who asked her where she had been in the last few years.
"The truth is, and please trust me I am OK and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days," she said. "Of course I survived. The recovery took time. There's no light way to say it. But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine."
Duffy added she did not choose to turn that pain into music because her heart was broken from the ordeal. "You wonder why I did not choose to use my voice to express my pain? I did not want to show the world the sadness in my eyes. I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken? And slowly it unbroke."
Duffy asked for no intrusion into her personal family life, adding a spoken interview with a journalist will be released in the coming weeks.
Following Rockferry, she released Endlessly in 2010. Duffy only released one song in the 10 years since — "Whole Lot of Love," which appeared in the 2015 gangster film Legend.
