Whether you're eagerly awaiting the arrival of De La Soul's catalogue on streaming services, or anticipating a follow-up to the group's 2016 album and the Anonymous Nobody..., the following news will surely be welcome: members of the formative trio have been spotted in-studio with Prince Paul.
Last week (August 10), the artist, producer and Stetasonic DJ shared a group shot of himself, De La Soul's Maseo and Posdnuos, Dres of fellow Native Tongues collective members Black Sheep, and Vancouver native Scott Harding — known best as engineer Scotty Hard — to his private Instagram account.
Days later (August 12), his post was followed by a respective tease from De La Soul's official account. Alongside an illustration of the trio and Prince Paul done in a Queen II-esque formation by Amy Cinnamon Art, the group shared the caption, "The magic is happening."
Prince Paul worked with De La Soul on their first three albums: 1989's 3 Feet High and Rising, 1991's De La Soul Is Dead and 1993's Buhloone Mindstate. Asked by HipHopDX about the happenings of the studio session, Prince Paul shared with the site, "I've been sworn to secrecy."
De La Soul listeners have been clamouring for the trio's discography to receive a digital release following the June 2021 acquisition of Tommy Boy Music, their former label home. Last August, the trio shared that their catalogue would arrive on streaming services in 2021, though it has yet to happen.
Along with those aforementioned first three albums, De La Soul's Tommy Boy catalogue also includes 1996's Stakes Is High, 2000's Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump and 2001's AOI: Bionix.
In February of 2014, the trio made their catalogue available for free via their website as a way to "[allow] our fans who have been looking and trying to get a hold of our music to have access to it," as Posdnuos told Rolling Stone at the time. More recently, the group's lengthy battle for their music was humorously spoofed by Teen Titans GO!
