After deciding not to take 2019 double album Everyday Life on the road over concern for environmental sustainability, Coldplay have now mapped out a world tour behind Music of the Spheres that is shaping up to be more mindful of Mother Nature.
The 30-date tour, which will kick off next March with support from H.E.R. and London Grammar, will reportedly see all performances powered by renewable energy, while the band have pledged to cut tour emissions by 50 percent.
A press release touts initiatives such as solar installations at every venue, reuse of cooking oil waste, a kinetic stadium floor and kinetic bikes powered by fans. All energy generated will be stored in a mobile, rechargeable show battery developed by BMW.
Additionally, Coldplay will provide free water at shows to discourage the use of plastic bottles, and have committed to planting one tree for each ticket sold to cut "significantly more CO2 than the tour produces." The environmental impact of the Music of the Spheres tour will be tracked by climate experts at Imperial College London's Grantham Institute.
Coldplay share in a statement that they were "very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis," noting how they have spent "the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour's potential to push things forward. We won't get everything right, but we're committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn."
A look at Coldplay's 2022 itinerary, found below, shows that no dates have been set for Canada. While additional performances could be booked for another leg of the trek, it's also entirely possible that Chris Martin and co. took a look at this country's atrocious climate record and were unimpressed by the ongoing oil and gas worship.
Music of the Spheres arrives tomorrow (October 15) through Atlantic. Here's hoping Coldplay make the trip to Canada on tour behind one of their final three albums.
